Hexaflex: Flexible Bench System

For the premaster I followed a course about the relations between humans and products. The goal was to design street furniture for a specific target group.

My target group was the ROC students at the train station of Hengelo. After conducting research about the wants and needs of these students, I formulated a vision: creating a place where the ROC students can sit in a relax and warm atmosphere.

The result was Hexaflex: a flexible bench system created on a triangular grid. Benches for one, three and five persons in combination with a object containing heaters make it possible to infinite change the placement. This flexibility fits perfect to the live of the ROC students, which is always changing. The colors and material are in contrast with the classical look of the station, showing the modern way of thinking of the students.

Key aspects of the design are: comfort, relaxing, sociability, comfortable atmosphere and media. The design is perfect for individuals as well as groups, it offers comfortable seating in a comfortable atmosphere. Due to the heaters and height of the objects, users are protected against wind and cold. Integrated wifi and plugs makes sure the students never have to be offline anymore.
