Virtual Guide for Dementia Patients

For the course Remote Care Nearby we had to design an application for remote care. Our group designed the BrainNurse; a virtual guide for dementia patients in a nursery home. The BrainNurse enables dementia patients to go outside for a walk.

The BrainNurse makes use of the Microsoft HoloLens to create virtual projections. Furthermore, a sweat level and heart rate sensor are integrated into the device. In addition, brain wave technology is used to measure the emotional state of the patient.

Combining the state of the patient gathered using the technologies described before with the state of the environment gathered by the location of the user and weather and day/night information, the BrainNurse determines different risk categories. When for example a mild state of confusing is determined, the user is guided back toward the nursery home with arrows projected on the Microsoft HoloLens. When a strong state of confusion is determined, contact with a virtual nurse, which is adapted to the patient, can be created on the Microsoft HoloLens.

In addition, the nurses can always track the position of the patient and also watch the camera view of the patient.
