Museum Guide for the Blind

For the course User Centred Design for New Media we had to design an application for a wearable for visually impaired and another user group that has difficulties with processing written information. We used Google Glass to create the application BLINDicated, which is a personal guide for inside museums. As a second group, foreigners were chosen. The main functionality of the application is guiding the user through the museum and helping the user with understanding the art works. The application uses a multi-modal approach. Rich information can be accessed in the visual and auditory domain. Confirmation messages can in addition also be created in the haptic domain, by vibrations. Functions the application provides are guiding following a certain route, finding the entrance and exit of the museum and finding special locations, such as the toilet. Also, obstacle avoidance, an artwork description translation and detailed design info are provided.

In this project, the user centered design process had the focus. Therefore, requirements, personas, use cases and scenarios provide extra information in addition to performed field studies. ER-diagrams, dataflow diagrams and transaction schemas were used to support the designed the application.
